대한민국은 엄혹했던 군부독재 정권 시절부터 오늘날까지 수많은 사회, 정치적 위기를 극복하며 민주주의의 기틀을 만들어 왔습니다. 그 역사적 분기점의 순간마다 부당한 권력에 저항해 온 시민들이 있었고, 그들의 목소리는 ‘시국선언문’이라는 텍스트로 역사에 기록되었습니다.
그러나, 불과 8년 전 탄핵을 겪었던 시민들은 오늘 다시 한번 같은 역사를 되풀이하는 혼란의 시간 속에 있습니다. 1960년 4.19 혁명, 1980년 5.18 민주화운동 그리고 1987년 6월 항쟁에서 우리가 체득했던 역사의 교훈은 시간의 흐름에 따라 그 선명함을 잃어가고 있는지도 모릅니다.
2024년, 다시 한번 역사의 격변기를 지나며, 우리는 한국 현대사의 변곡점마다 시민의 목소리를 담아낸 시국선언문을 다시 소환하고자 합니다. 《시대 정신》 프로젝트는 특정 정권의 파면을 넘어, 그 이후 시민의 손으로 만들어 나가야 할 민주주의의 모습을 그려보고자 합니다.

From the harsh days of the military dictatorship to the present day, South Korea has overcome numerous social and political crises to build the foundations of democracy. At each of those historical junctures, there were citizens who resisted unjust power, and their voices were recorded in history as the text of the manifestos.
Today, however, the same citizens who faced impeachment just eight years ago are once again in the midst of a time of turmoil that is repeating history. The lessons of history that we learned from the April 19 Revolution of 1960, the May 18 Democratic Movement of 1980, and the June 1987 uprising may be losing their clarity with the passage of time.
In 2024, as we once again pass through a turbulent period in our history, we would like to revisit the manifestos that have captured the voices of citizens at every inflection point in Korea’s modern history. The “Zeitgeist” project aims to look beyond the passing of a particular regime and envision what democracy should look like in the hands of citizens afterward.
