Teatise on Rhythm, Color and Birdsong&is an exhibition by Lee Jewook inspired by a musical experiment by French composer Olivier Messiaen, who sought a new genre of Western music. Motivated by ‘Steller’s Jay’, a bird native to Bryce Canyon, Utah, the U.S., Olivier Messiaen transformed its geological characteristics into notes, turning his experience of color-sound-sympathy into music.
Teatise on Rhythm, Color and Birdsong&is the same title as Olivier Messiahen’s music theory book, and contains the song “Des canyons étoiles”, a song inspired by nature in southern Utah, the United States. We applied the shape of ‘Steller’s Jay’ and the Utah terrain to cover and inner paper. And ‘Steller’s Jay’s feather color is applied to the front of the cover and inner body to convey the theme of the exhibition.
