The SOSA Industrial Complex is a factory that made machines for companies that dominated Korean manufacturing from the 1970s to the 2000s. Newspapers were printed, sweets and chewing gum were made, and manhole covers and pulp were produced on machines made in this factory.

At some point, the ‘industrial complex’, a familiar landscape in the development of Korea’s modern history, was classified as a dangerous facility to be demolished, treated as a ruin, and eventually demolished. SOSA Industrial Complex: A factory that builds machines documents the process of its demise, from when the machines stopped moving in 2020 to its complete demolition in 2023, and evokes the memories of the workers who once operated the machines.

EVERYDAY PRACTICE used the “Yankee lathe”, which was predominantly used at the SOSA Industrial Complex, as a graphic motif to visualise the exhibition’s theme of “relationality”, created through a collaboration of visual artists, photographers, cultural researchers, archivists, architects and filmmakers.
