Counterpoint is an essay on music and grief by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Philip Kennicott. It is an honest and beautifully written account of his musical journey to learn Bach‘s Goldberg Variations in the five years following his mother’s death, and his process of understanding and mourning his unhappy and complicated relationship with his mother, who was cold and sadistic, but with whom he shared a love of music.

Everyday Practice tried to visualize the mourning experience of touching a tombstone by touching the graphic on the cover, which is represented by the tooling, and designed the typography to be rhythmic to match the music-related essays, and set it against the overall calm neutral colors with lime accents to metaphorically represent the author‘s sentiments, which also speak to the possibility of hope.
