Organized by the Gwangju Biennale Foundation to commemorate the May 18 Democratization Movement’s fortieth anniversary, MaytoDay aims to shed light on the movement’s legacies by examining works presented at previous editions of the Gwangju Biennale. As its title implies, MaytoDay draws attention to the lasting effects, everydayness, and micro-histories of the May 18 spirit, and seeks to situate this discourse amid us today. Since last May, MaytoDay mounted a sequence of projects in Seoul, Taipei, Cologne and Gwangju in collaboration with invited curators. Through them, it sought to investigate the contemporary and transnational resonance of the Democratization Movement. As a long-term project, MaytoDay continues this year by exploring the histories and meanings of the May 18 within the contemporary context with the work of twelve artists either born or based in Gwangju.  We visualized the multi-layered meaning of the May 18 Democratic Movement through overlapping layers. We built a graphic identity by borrowing the structural features and colors of the former Armed Forces Gwangju Hospital where the Between the Seen and the Spoken exhibition will be held.
