세월호 참사는 현재를 인식하는 우리의 미세한 감각을 변화시켰을지도 모릅니다. ‘바다는 가라앉지 않는다’라는 문장은 일상의 풍경이, 사람들 사이의 관계가, 평범하다고 느껴졌던 사회의 시스템을 바라보는 시각이 5년 전 그날 이전일 수 없음을 함축적으로 말하고 있습니다. 그러나 ‘잊지 않겠다’던 다짐은 ‘아직도 세월호인가’라는 질문에 가려 눈물로 다짐했던 그날의 선명함은 점점 흐려졌습니다. 아직 돌아오지 못한 사람들의 가족을 캡사이신을 뿌리며 진압하는 경찰과, 피자 냄새를 풍기며 진상 규명을 요구하는 유가족들과 생존자의 단식투쟁을 조롱하는 자칭 애국청년의 모습은, 참사 이전과 이후에 살고 있는 우리의 모습을 극단적인 대비로 보여주고 있습니다. 노란 리본을 철조망에 엮어 써 내려간 작업 ’캡사이신 피자 국가 바다는 가라앉지 않는다’는 참사 이전의 기억으로 회기 하려는 우리의 기억을 다시 한번 또렷하게 하고자 하는 시도입니다.

The Sewol ferry disaster may have changed our perception of the present. The phrase, “The Sea will Not Sink,” implies that the way we look at the system of society that we used to think of as normal can not be the same before the Sewol ferry disaster. We’ve vowed not to forget, but as time goes by, we’re forgetting more and more of the day. Police cracked down on the bereaved families’ rallies by firing capsaicin, while youths mocked the bereaved families on a hunger strike while eating pizza. This conflict is currently showing extreme contrast in Korean society. This installation is an attempt to make clear the memories of those who are gradually forgetting the Sewol ferry disaster.
