10 Years of Everyday Practice
EVERYDAY PRACTICE

“Everyday Practice is a small organization that actively contemplates the role design plays and what can be accomplished in this contemporary moment. Graphic design is the foundation of the organization, but by exploring diverse techniques and practices Everyday Practice expands the boundaries and mediums of design.”

For the past 10 years, the above statement has been the guiding words we, Everyday Practice, have operated under. The phrasing may seem overly declarative and grand, but in 2013 those words honestly conveyed the direction we, the three founding members of the studio, wanted to go. The message was closer to a declaration of commitment to the work we would go on to build. In reflection, it would’ve been more accurate to say ‘plan to explore’ or ‘want to explore’ instead of the active ‘exploring’.

Everyday Practice has acted on this commitment by building a visual language that truly explores design through the use of diverse tools and techniques. All the while, we have consistently been motivated by a belief in the infinite possibilities of graphic design rather than be restrained by a narrow interpretation of the field. As a studio, we’ve grown our vision beyond traditional graphic design by openly interpreting the forms and themes we discover in architecture, painting, photography, films and culture at large. Throughout, we have expressed these findings through the methods and techniques of commercial art and demonstrated how boundaries can be overcome. Through collaborations and exchanges with artists, acting upon important social movements and issues, re-interpreting issues in contemporary art we deepened our commitment of exploration. In reflection, the grand experiment of Everyday Practice proves the expansive influence of design.

The words “everyday” and “practice” may appear simple, but in reality they carry a heavy burden and responsibility. By naming the studio as a combination of these words, “Everyday Practice”, has been a guiding banner for the studio to solidify our bold and grand commitment that we penned 10 years ago. What is it that we want to say through the many experiments and works made over the past 10 years? What is the form of an organization centered around design? The exhibition Everyday Practice is a record of how a wishful commitment can be concretely realized.
